To mark the publication of my new book, On Not Fitting In (Routledge, 2026), I am offering an online workshop exploring some fundamental psychoanalytic questions.
Across two lectures, I’ll explore why psychoanalysis—especially Lacanian analysis—treats not fitting in as something other than a failure of adaptation, and examine some of the different ways we negotiate the challenges posed by our constitutive lack and excess.
The first lecture, Why We Don’t Fit, will consider our relation to language, the social order, and the status of the symptom in psychoanalytic thought.
The second lecture, Ways of Not Fitting, will turn to the question of subjective structure and consider what psychoanalysis can offer in response to various forms of suffering today.
In the final hour of the workshop, I’ll have a conversation about On Not Fitting In—the influences that shaped it, the process of its composition, and its structure (a book that itself doesn’t quite fit with conventional ideas about analytic literature)—with psychoanalyst Florian J. Richarts before opening the workshop into a conversation with participants.
This event will be of interest to clinicians in training and in practice, from both analytic and non-analytic orientations, but it will not be narrowly clinical in focus and will assume no prior knowledge. It is intended to be accessible to anyone with an interest in what psychoanalysis has to say about conformity and nonconformity, freedom and dependence, identity and difference, and the difficulty of finding a place in relation to what is expected of us.
